season shift III

When I subtitled this blog ‘discovering more beauty through writing’, I had no idea of the truth of how much I really would find a kind of goodness through the act of expressing deep things… I am home from a business trip and as usual, I lost myself a little in the intensity of it. I had a wonderful weekend with old friends, and yet, as with all reconnections after the wildness of the last years, there was an immense confrontation even in the gentle rhythms of Parisian life in the suburbs. We are older, we are scarred by the experiences of isolation, some dreams have not materialised. Yet. So there was delight and there was darkness and I did not have time to comprehend the dance of those experiences.

Then I arrived home into the season shift I had left, and of course the season had crept along without me. Trees are shedding leaves, the sunshine, though beautiful is weaker, the weather forecast predicts days of thick cloud.

And yet, writing. It is a miracle, a way through, the lit path. I sit down and see what I have written, and in it, rediscover who I am. The thread of the writing illuminates hope, is a kind of hope.

It is endlessly mysterious to me and it is wondrous.

I can feel old things disintegrating around me, and in the words I perceive the already-present buds of the new.

season shift II

Finding the right position for the season shift is ongoing. This week has been somewhat severe in its insistence on change. The neighbours have returned to their apartment and I can no longer play the piano in the mornings. This week turned extremely cold with blustery rain, making my garden writing starts impossible. I have client projects beginning which take up substantial space in the week’s schedules, and I am wondering where to place and how to find time for the delicacy and sensitivity of writing, pondering, persisting, discovering. I had to retrieve various jumpers, tights and coats from the attic and the light garments of summer are soon to be banished to make space for them. Somehow these things also coincided with the unexpected completion of a writing project that has been going on for three years. Another one is starting but the disappearance, all of a sudden, of the previous project’s routine was a shock.

As you can see I have not quite come to a contentment in and embrace of autumn.

And yet I do love autumn joys. What is it that is clinging on inside me? An unspoken disappointment? Fear? A kind of seasonal abandonment making me feel bereft?

I’m being invited to surrender and I don’t want to. The season to come is going to be more demanding than the season I am leaving. It’s a fact.

Is it a fact?

As I write I peer into winter’s darkness I can see it as if lit up with a path of candlelight. This image of light is all the more striking this year as one of the themes of my work and life has been disruption over lighting. I will not go into it more here, but the very perception of a path of lights entices me a little, stirring a desire that has been starkly absent, refusing to emerge.

Hmmm a lit path… lit as if guiding a path to a beautiful place, though at night.

Perhaps this is the invitation I need to find a way through.

though borrowed, a queen’s instrument
peace, beauty, renovation, reunion
soul.

blows and beauty

I was radiant with hope
delighting in the beauty
the truth, luminous over
my being, my story.

Blows rained down,
as if a cudgel to the heart
yet mere words.

You took my fears
as a script, copied
the old patterns
I thought I had, perhaps
eluded.

You crushed all joy from me
dismissing that it once
was shared, that depth,
the wonder of a true
communion.

Or was it? Certainty you
sowed with doubt, did you?
were you? how could you?
To our dreaming together you said,
no, alone.

An uncanny insistence
growls irritable from deep within me.
Trust your heart; your
own wisdom is truth.
Believe yourself.

What do I say to you now?
Can I undo myself from the
places you have
conveniently assigned for me
not to cause disturbance
not to trouble your
nice new story?
to elude the work
of making ground?

Can I heal from the idol
jailer of your own captivity?

My battle now is yours,
unfought.

I am not ruled by
convenience or comfort.
I seek truth.
Your blows have momentarily discouraged me
My wounds will heal
A mere skirmish, I will announce,
My laughter will return.
I will dance again.

I have lived this story before,
perhaps, yes,
some may say
but now I’m wiser

I untwist the events from your grasp
evil prophet,
I laugh giddy at my freedom, my knowing
this time the story will belong to beauty.

Divenire

So I was in the studio and then I wasn’t and then I was trying to find the studio inside and to get to it I found a studio rhythm and this is indeed helping me to dwell in the reality of the studio inside and even though I have not got to painting yet I am in something, definitely.

And all the time, every possible day, I have been playing Einaudi’s Divenire on the piano that I have been given the keys to in the neighbours’ downstairs apartment.

In the studio week I finally linked, for the first time, the bits I knew with the mysterious bit in the middle, and suddenly I had a whole.

But it was a kind of scratchy, awkward, patched-together whole, because my fingers had not been accustomed to playing music for such a long time, nor my brain for concentrating so continuously on something so precise. The piece is nearly ten minutes long and it is a work to hold my attention in the exact present without having it distract somewhere else – and in fact usually this distraction does not totally affect the flow, but what does affect it is the jolt of realising that you are elsewhere and then trying to relocate yourself in the music, which usually causes a stumble.

So each day of the month since I left the studio I have been playing – of course as part of the studio rhythm – and then often recording myself to hear how the piece is feeling. It has taken time to ease out places of complexity and to smooth the trickier jumps of hand and the release the tension of areas which require more skill and concentration, which is all very well, but until the skill and concentration is mastered, there is anxiety that makes itself felt by the listener.

Over the month, I have become aware that somehow the piece was also taking me somewhere; in losing myself into it, I am finding a self, I am becoming – divenire – a self that I have not been for a long time, perhaps ever.

There are different elements in a journey of allowing music to form you; some are intellectual, some physical, some emotional, some deeper. There is an integration that has to happen which must be then somehow anointed with a grace from somewhere else. It is work and mystery.

Yesterday I had a very important insight: I had been working towards a recording that sounded accurate; each note in place, sounding beautiful. Yesterday it was sounding often beautiful, but still, there were occasional, sometimes jarring errors. But suddenly it came to me, listening, that I’d forgotten the fundamental fact of live performance; that there is a humanity in it that cannot and should not be eradicated, the eradication of which, in fact, would substitute a kind of overworked tension, and anyway would only likely be possible through mechanistic means.

But this insight had a follower, as if hidden behind its back. If it already was (almost) beautiful, and there would always be some humanity left in the beauty, then the moment I had been waiting for might be arriving sooner than I’d expected.

And then yes, this morning, I was there, in a beautiful completion of piece and self. Divenire.

And now I am waiting for what happens next.
